‘Children, it is the last hour,’ writes St. John in the passage we heard from his first letter at Mass today. Apropos, to say the least, on this final day of 2014. But it was the Gospel reading—also from John—that really caught my attention this morning: To my ear, at least, a pitch-perfect summary of the season…and the year we are about to conclude.
Today’s find: A wink and a smile
Our granddaughter paid us an unexpected visit yesterday afternoon, and it turned into something of an Easter moment for me.

This week’s question: What was the biggest change in your life recently? And that’s an easy one for me — our first grandchild came into the world a month ago Monday. She continues to delight us with her unique view on the world.
As for blogging this week: I wrote a reflection on a father’s role in encouraging religious vocations…and I said farewell to a dear friend and spiritual companion, one who is now a full-fledged member of the communion of saints.
Let us pause now…to remember that we are in the presence of the Holy One.
