There was an intriguing lesson about mercy to be learned inside the prison today, courtesy of Saint Dismas.
Better known as the good thief in St. Luke’s account of the crucifixion, Dismas is remembered for his courage in rebuking the tormentor of Jesus, but even more importantly, for a simple but heartfelt request for mercy.
As he is dying on the cross, Dismas says “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
And as one of my Kairos teammates pointed out today, Jesus’ reply was decisive… instantaneous…and eternal.
Jesus says to Dismas, “Today you will be with me in paradise.”
What a gift our Redeemer offered to the condemned man! What a gift Jesus offers just as freely to us: Forgiveness that is decisive. Instantaneous. And eternal.
Let us pause now…to recall that we are in the presence of the Holy One.
