As 2013 draws to a close…there’s time for one more ‘Old Year’ gathering of bloggers at RAnn’s place for Sunday Snippets: A Catholic Carnival. You’re invited to share some holiday cheer with several different writers there …
The question of the week is: Do you have any spiritual New Year’s resolutions?
My primary resolution is to finish reading two great books: Evelyn Underhill’s Mysticism…and Fyodor Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamozov. I’ve been working on the former for a while — and it’s both rewarding and challenging to make my way through Underhill’s densely packed survey of mystical wisdom and traditions. As for the latter, on a friend’s advice, I asked Santa for a copy of the Pevear / Volokhonsky translation of Dostoevsky’s classic novel. I’ve tried getting through it before…but never succeeded. From what I’m told, though, this “new & improved” translation is a spiritually enriching experience — so I’m looking forward to the literary journey!
On the blogging front, my holiday week offered a few opportunities for reflection — including a meditation on the true star of Christmas…a celebration of the gift of family…and a few thoughts on the grace to be found in presence and parting.

I think you should re-read Moby Dick and explain it to me
“Re-read”? Sad to say, that’s ANOTHER great novel I never managed to finish. But I appreciate the encouragement, Mike!
