I tried hard not to be jealous when a friend told me about his plans to spend this weekend skiing in Colorado. Then he sent a photo of the view he’s enjoying in Telluride.

Even so, there Dennis was, on duty, at 7:40 AM…to open up and welcome me (plus about 35 other strangers) into the Fellowship Hall of the Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chester yesterday.

First-time team members typically find the request shocking: We ask everyone who serves on team to round up 40 dozen homemade cookies, all to be shared with residents and staffers during our Kairos Prison Ministry weekend retreat.

Eight armored doors. That’s what stood between our incarcerated brothers and freedom…when we presented a Kairos Weekend to them at a supermax prison in 2012. Those eight doors, plus an ever-jangling assortment of handcuffs and leg-irons.
